My car was reported stolen, but I did not report it stolen, what should I do?

Question by A N: My car was reported stolen, but I did not report it stolen, what should I do?
I got pulled over and the police impounded my car saying that it had been reported stolen. Neither I or the registered owner reported it stolen. The police are saying that some other woman from a different state reported it stolen. The title is in my name and the registration is in my friends name and has been for over a year now. This woman says that she bought the car, but I never sold it to her! She only borrowed it from me for a short period of time. She does not have a title and she does not have a bill of sale of any kind. I never sold the car to her in any way. How did she report the car stolen with no proof of ownership?? WHY are the police holding my car as evidence in an impound lot? How is this legal??? The police HAVE my title that has MY name on it and my friends name on the registration. How is this possible? What do I do to get my car out of impound? I was released from jail with no charges and no charges were filed against me of any kind. But yet they are still keeping my car in impound. How is this legal? Please help…

In most states you do not need proof of ownership to report a vehicle stolen. I would talk to a lawyer because they will try and charge you for the impound if you don’t do something about it. In the future I would have the title and registration and all of that in the same name to avoid any confusion. Nothing good has ever come for me from loaning out my vehicle. Maybe you have better choices in friends.

Of course, the police should just take your word for it?. NO, they should not.

You’ve got a confusing situation already, with title and reg in different names, so when they get a report from someone else claiming that they own the car, they have to investigate. Until they finish their investigation, they have to hold the car
