I need to know some information on impound laws.?

Question by D G: I need to know some information on impound laws.?
My friend sold a car to an aquintence who sold it again with out transfering the title over. The guy he sold it to never registered it either and was pulled over. The car was impounded due to the guy not having a license and registration and no insurance. Now my friend is being held responsible for impound fees, the police release fee and has to recover the title before he can get the car out of impound. He has no intrest in the car and does not want it, yet the impound lot and the DMV have both told him that even though he has a bill of sale, because it was not noterized it is inadmisable and he is ultimatly responsible for all fees including a holding fee for however long the car is up for auction. What are his rights as a seller when faced with this issue and what course of legal action should he pursue?

He had the right to sell the car in the correct way the first time. He choose not to do that. He could try to report the car as abandoned for salvage. Some states have different laws vis a vie car titles and salvage.

But the most likely end result is him and a fine spending a lovely evening together. On the plus side he gets his car back and he can resell it.
